An active member of St John Wales's Ecclesiastical Committee will be royally honoured at a special awards ceremony at 3pm on Saturday October 9.

Revd Gethin Abraham-Williams, a Sub Prelate and former Priory Chaplain of the Order of St John, will be promoted as a Commander Brother of the Order at St Mary's Church in Swansea.
Revd Abraham-Williams, who joined St John eight years ago, will be presented with the prestigious honour - which has been approved by Her Majesty the Queen, who is Sovereign Head of the Order, with 11 other exceptional members of St John Wales.

"As the St John Cymru Wales Moderator of the Free Church Council of Wales, my hope is that my promotion will help reinforce the commitment of the Free Churches to the work of St John," said Mr Abraham-Williams.

He added: "The most enjoyable part of my role has been visiting the different divisions in my south Wales region, and seeing at first hand the immense dedication of the volunteers', as well as the enthusiasm and application of the young people."

This year, Cytun's AGM and Enabling Group was held in Llandudno (19 October). Progress was made on seeking to make Wales the first Nation of Sanctuary in the UK and Ireland. Good progress was made around the same theme at the Welsh Assembly Government's Faith Communities Forum this morning.

Yn dilyn penderfyniad Urdd Gobaith Cymru i ganiatáu gwerthu alcohol ar faes yr Eisteddfod am y tro cyntaf yn Llanerchaeron, Ceredigion ym mis Mai 2010, mae e-ddeiseb wedi cael ei lansio yn galw ar Gynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru i annog Llywodraeth Cymru i ddarparu cyllid i Eisteddfod yr Urdd yn y dyfodol ar yr amod na werthir alcohol ar faes yr Eisteddfod. Ar anogaeth Cyngor Cymru ar Alcohol a Chyffuriau Eraill, mae’r e-ddeiseb yn gyfle i unrhyw un sydd yn poeni am y penderfyniad i gofrestru eu pryderon gyda’r Cynulliad. Gellir arwyddo’r ddeiseb yma.

Following the decision of Urdd Gobaith Cymru to allow alcohol to be sold on the Eisteddfod site for the first time in Llanerchaeron, Ceredigion in May 2010, an e-petition has been launched to ask the Welsh Assembly to consider only funding future Urdd Eisteddfodau on condition that alochol is not sold on the Eisteddfod site.

Instigated by the Welsh Council for Alcohol and Other Drugs, the e-petition is an opportunity for anyone who has concerns about the decision to register their concerns with the Assembly. The petition can be accessed here.

Cafodd Branwen gyfle i ymweld a rhai o bartneriaid Cymorth Cristnogol, a siarad gyda theuluoedd sydd wedi cael cymorth brys ers y ddaeargryn ysgytwol. Bydd y rhaglen i’w gweld ar S4C nos Lun nesaf, Chwefror 1af am 9.30pm.

Branwen Niclas from Christian Aid has just returned from Haiti. She travelled there with ITV Wales’ filimng crew to witness Christian Aid’s relief operation and long term work in Haiti. Branwen met some of Christian Aid’s partners and talked to families who have benefited from funds raised from Wales since the devastating earthquake. The ‘BYD AR BEDWAR’ programme will be broadcasted on S4C (with subtitles) on Monday, February 1st at 9.30pm

Eleven Churches and Church agencies have worked together to create an electronic booklet and website www.churcheselection.org.uk, which includes information on how to arrange a hustings meeting at local churches as well as a downloadable guide offering information on the important questions of this election campaign.

The election materials do not support a particular Church view or political party line, but aim to help people engage with a range of important issues facing the country, however they may decide to vote.

Rachel Lampard, Public Issues Policy Adviser for the Methodist Church who worked on the resources produced by Methodist Publishing and Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, said: “We hope that the website will really help Christians engage with the election. The Faith in Politics booklet covers a whole range of policy issues, written by leading Christian experts and campaigners. The website also carries new guidance for groups wishing to hold hustings events during the election campaign, enabling people to register their interest in organising a hustings event and be put in touch with others in their constituency. We hope churches up and down the country will take advantage of these ecumenical resources.”

Faith in Politics covers issues including the economy, environment, health, education, equality and diversity, Europe, migration and sanctuary, poverty and criminal justice. The resource also provides a series of questions to facilitate personal or group reflection on political issues, or which could be used to quiz election candidates.

The Revd Dr Malcolm Brown, Director of the Church of England's Mission and Public Affairs Division, said: “I really hope these resources will be used by churches across the country to help them get ready for the General Election. They provide a rich range of material from which Christians and others can explore policy areas and form questions for their parliamentary candidates. The material points to the breadth of the impact that Westminster politics can have on the life of the nation, and I hope it will stimulate searching questions that will in turn help people make an informed judgement about how they use their vote.”

The Revd Bob Fyffe, General Secretary of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, said “These resources will provide a rich source of information for churches and Churches Together groups across the four nations. The combination of these resources together with the online hustings information should ensure that Christians around the UK can fully engage in discussions with their prospective parliamentary candidates. The fact that the Churches have worked together to provide these resources is a strong statement in itself, and we hope that local churches and groups will fully engage in the democratic process.”

The UK government’s plan to combat binge-drinking by banning all-you-can-drink promotions in bars has been welcomed by a Welsh chapel union leader. This shows that the government has recognised – at last – that binge drinking is a very serious problem, said the Revd Beti-Wyn James, who chairs the Family Department of the Union of Welsh Independent chapels. But this should be the first step, she said. Legislation is also needed to set a minimum price on unreasonably cheap alcohol sold in supermarkets.

Closing five departments at Bangor University would undermine Welsh-medium education and be a serious blow to the nation’s scholarship, according to three Welsh Christian leaders, who are calling on the University Council to reject the plan. The General Secretaries of the Presbyterians, Baptists and Independents are particularly concerned about the future of the School of Theology and Religious Studies. At a time when a clear understanding is needed of traditional Welsh Christianity as well as other minority religions, it’s incredible that Bangor University should even consider closing the department, the three say in a letter to the college’s Vice-Chancellor. The University’s Council is expected to discuss the departments’ future later this month.

Christian Aid / Cymorth Cristnogol - Haiti

Christian Aid has launched a £1m emergency appeal for victims of the Haiti earthquake. Thousands of people are already feared dead and many more are believed to be critically injured. Countless are thought to be homeless.

The quake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, struck 15km southwest of the capital Port-au-Prince just before 5pm local time yesterday, and was shortly followed by two strong aftershocks of 5.9 and 5.5.

Launching the appeal, Dame Anne Owers, Chair of Christian Aid, said: ‘I visited Haiti in recent months with Christian Aid and was deeply concerned about the level of poverty there. It is one of the poorest places on earth.

‘This latest disaster is going to cause untold suffering and hardship, particularly in communities with very little to fall back on. There is an urgent need for emergency supplies, including food, shelter and medicine.

‘In the longer term, rebuilding is going to require massive international assistance. I appeal to people and to governments to give what they can.’

Nick Guttman, head of Christian Aid’s humanitarian division, said today: ‘The situation in Haiti is very, very serious due to the strength and shallowness of the earthquake and its proximity to the capital Port-au-Prince.

‘Most of the buildings and infrastructure in Haiti are very fragile. Many people have been killed by falling debris and there are still many more trapped under the rubble, in desperate need of assistance.

‘Hundreds of offices, hotels, houses and shops have collapsed, the presidential palace lies in ruins, and many churches have also been completely destroyed.

‘The Christian Aid office itself has also collapsed and three people, including Christian Aid staff, had to be rescued from the rubble. Thankfully they are safe but communications to the country are very difficult since the city is without electricity and the telephone network has broken down.

‘The absolutely critical humanitarian needs now are obviously search and rescue, much of which is initially being carried out by local people and organisations, shelter, clean water and medical assistance.’

Christian Aid’s Caribbean Regional Manager Judith Turbyne said the Christian Aid building was relatively robust but was still destroyed. Loss of life in poorer communities is expected to be very high.

‘One of the key issues in Haiti is the weak state and the lack of resources at the state’s disposal,’ she said.

‘There will be a national response, but it is unlikely to be sufficient. There will be a huge need for a concerted response on behalf of the relatively large aid community in Haiti.’

Christian Aid partner organisations in Haiti, Veterimed and Koral, are very experienced in emergency response work, and will be working round the clock to meet the urgent humanitarian needs.

John Roberts - Trawsfynydd

Last night, Thursday 10th December 2009, a unique bilingual Mass was held in a small Church in Dolgellau, launching a year of celebrations for Saint John Roberts, of Trawsfynydd, who was executed 400 years ago at Tybyrn. Present at the Mass were Bishop Edwin Regan, the Dolgellau Nuns of the Carmelite Order and Father Joshy, the Parish Priest who originates from India and who is learning Welsh. Father Joshy also took part in the opening service at this year’s National Eisteddfod in Bala. The year of celebrations will run from the 10th of December 2009 until the 10th of December 2010. The sequence of events taking place throughout the year will lead up to a landmark event to be held in Westminster Cathedral, London on 17th July 2010 where, for the first time ever, the Head of the Catholic Church, Archbishop of Westminster Vincent Nichols, and Head of the Anglican Church, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, will unite with Wales’ religious leaders to celebrate the life of one of Wales’ Saints.

After a week's holiday, it was good to enjoy the Inter-faith Eisteddfod on Saturday and to preach at Bethania Church, Mountain Ash on Sunday afternoon. Last night, it was an honour to attend the farewell reception for Rhodri Morgan. I wish Rhodri and Julie well for the future.

Just enjoyed two encouraging days planning the way ahead for the Commission of the Covenanted Churches. The focus is on the visible unity of the churches. I'm on my way to enjoying a meal with Christian friends from Wales' ethnic minorities.

I'm back from a week's break and the launch of the All Wales Convention Report. Over the past two days Cytun has served the Free Church Council of Wales, held discussions with the Welsh Assembly Government concerning religious education and shared fellowship with friends from the Elim tradition.

Yesterday was mainly spent in Newport on the Wales Strategic Migration Partnership. Links with these partners helped Cytun to successfully process the visa appeal of a young Pategonian of Welsh background.

This morning I attended an asylum meeting arranged by a number of churches in Cardiff. City Church (URC), Windsor Place has pioneered fantastic work with some of Wales' most vulnerable displaced people.
